About NorthStar

Students practising photography in a NorthStar classroom

Our Story

NorthStar Photography School began with a simple belief: adults learn best when they are challenged, supported and surrounded by like-minded creatives.

Founded in 2015 by Daniel Carter, a Sydney-based editorial photographer, NorthStar grew from a small weekend workshop into one of the city's most respected adult photography schools. We have trained hundreds of students, many of whom now work commercially or exhibit their personal projects.

Our classrooms are located in the heart of Russell Lea, equipped with professional lighting, printing facilities and breakout spaces for critique sessions. Every course is designed around practical outcomes, not theory for theory's sake.

Mission & Vision

To make professional photography education accessible, practical and inspiring for adult learners across Australia.

We believe photography is more than a technical skill. It is a way of seeing the world, telling stories and building confidence. Our mission is to give every student the technical foundation and creative freedom to develop a personal visual language.

  • Teach practical skills that transfer directly to real-world projects
  • Foster a respectful, inclusive learning environment
  • Support lifelong learning beyond the classroom

Our Teaching Philosophy

We teach photography the way it is actually practised: by doing, by reviewing, and by refining.

Every class balances concise technical instruction with extended shooting time. Students receive immediate feedback during sessions and detailed written notes after each module. We avoid jargon and focus on the decisions that make a photograph work.

Group sizes are deliberately small so instructors can spend time with each photographer. This personalised approach is why our students progress quickly and confidently.
